As a result of the COVID challenges, Sensible Self Defense has partnered with a respected online Texas Online LTC Course provider. We are not offering in person classroom courses at this time; however, we are offering the range instruction required to complete the online course and the shooting qualification at Cedar Ridge Range, an outdoor range. See below for more information.
Texas Online License To Carry
Get certified online for your Texas License to Carry. Our Sensible Self Defense online license to carry course is the official, Texas Department of Public Safety-certified
online Texas LTC course. We make it easy to get your Texas License to
Carry. With our service, you don't have to go searching for an LTC
instructor to complete the range safety and qualification.
You can
take our license to carry class from the comfort of your your own home
or anywhere else with an internet connection, 24/7 at your own pace, and
on your own schedule. You don't need to dedicate an entire day sitting
in a crowded classroom--particularly important during the COVID
pandemic. Our online class is available to everyone regardless of where
you live in Texas and class is certified statewide.
When you
complete our online course you will be able to instantly download the
LTC-101 training certificate that Texas requires for your Texas License
to Carry application. You will also learn how to apply for your license
in our online class. The last module of the online course discusses the
application process, obtaining the range instruction, and completing the
live fire qualification. If you wish to take the range instruction and
shooting portion from us please see below.
The Range Instruction and Shooting Portion of the Texas LTC Application Process:
After
you take our online LTC class, we schedule and conduct the range
instruction and the shooting portion at Cedar Ridge Range in Bulverde,
Texas. The range portion requires a separate fee of $58.00 which
includes the range fee and targets. You must provide ammunition, eye
and hearing protection, and your pistol. If you are having a difficult
time finding ammunition we often have it available as well at market
cost.
Who Can Take The Online LTC Class?
Anyone from anywhere
in Texas can take our official Texas Online License to Carry class. It
does not matter where you are located; however we only offer the range
instruction and shooting portion at Cedar Ridge Range.
Our online class uses 15-20 minute video segments for ease in learning. The
virtual training program saves your progress at the completion of each
video, allowing you to take the online LTC class as fast or slow as you
wish. Watch for 15 minutes and come back to continue another day, or
watch all 4 hours at once.

Classroom Texas LTC Class
Texas Law currently mandates that the course be 4-6 hrs in length not including the range qualification. Our classroom portion generally lasts 4-1/2 hours. In addition to all Texas LTC mandatory topics, we provide an (always extremely well-received) overview of situational awareness and crime avoidance. We use a combination of lecture, class participation, and video material.
Unlike a lot of Texas LTC classes, our class is not an ego trip for the instructor. We do not bore you with “I was there” stories or waste your time. We provide you a framework of understanding so that you may make an informed, split-second decision concerning the use of force or deadly force within the constraints of Texas LTC laws.
Final Exam:
Before taking the final exam, we will go over covered materials and answer any questions that students may have. Students must achieve a proficiency level of 70% on the written exam in order to pass the course. We have never had a student leave the class having failed the written test--we will work with you and go over the material until you have a sufficient understanding to pass the written test.
Range Qualification: A total of 50 rounds are fired during the course of the qualification test. A score of 70%, or 175 points of a possible 250, is required to pass. The target used is a TX-PT (a Standard B-27) target which is a human-shaped silhouette target measuring 45 by 24 inches. Please see the picture above for the scoring of the Texas LTC Qualification Course. All shooting is from the ready position, which means the gun is already in your hands and aimed at the target--the Texas LTC Qualification does not require drawing from the holster.
We have had only one student (by the student’s choice) leave the range without qualifying. The Texas LTC class is not designed to teach you to shoot; however, if you fail the shooting qualification we will provide a very limited overview of basic shooting positions and allow ONE re-shoot free of charge. Students must provide or purchase any ammunition required for the re-shoot.
